Hello, I am looking for information on Tatemina (Round Wind), the Dakota warrior that received a last minute pardon from President Lincoln that saved him from the gallows and the fate of the thirty-eight. I am looking for as much information as possible: Was he from Little Crow's band? How old was he? Was he married? Did he have children? Was Whipple the man responsible for saving him? What was the argument that convinced Lincoln that he was innocent? I understand that two German boys accused him and that their testimony was questionable from the outset. Where was Tatemina when the boy's mother was killed? I have been writing a historical novel over the last two years that culminates with the Sioux uprising and mass hanging that was its result. Accurate information is important to me.

Thank you! Wonderful information . . . I have looked at what the Minnesota Historical Society has, and your information is, by far, the most helpful. I live near the Mdewakanton reservation in Prior Lake, and they have little information of the type I seek, however, I have seen a copy of the document from Lincoln (according to Indigenous Policy Journal, The Indian Policy of Abraham Lincoln), which orders the executions. This name occurs as the ninth name on Lincoln’s proclamation and he is identified as “Ta–Te–Mi-Na" and he appears as number 15 by the record.
Is it possible that we are talking about two different men? According to the birth year you gave me, he would have been 65 at the time of the uprising. Does that make sense?
If you can provide anything further, please do so. I appreciate your help.

No it is the same one, what was in the letter Lincoln signed was the english adulteration of his name. the whites wrote the names as they heard them pronounced. i have seen his name spelled also as Tatemima. In Dakota ,they don't pronounce the n. Yes he was pardoned at the last minute. In fact, he had had a letter written for him in Dakota, to be given to his family, the night before the executions. He is not on the list of those released in 18666 from the Ft. MCclellan Prison Camp, nor on the list of those who died while in prison. He amy have been sent to Crow Creek with the other Internees t Ft. Snelling in Spring of 1863. the re was a roll made of those at Crow Creek in 1864, but it was so badly damaged, that only 4 pages survived. I can only specualte that he may have died at Crow Creek. He and Mary Tonkanne or Tunkanna were the siblings of Chief Big Thunder,(I don't know if he was Little Crow the II or III) of the Little Crow Dynasty. Nancy Anpahdewin shows up on the 1885 Santee Census as the grandmother of Charles St. Clair. I haven't been able to connect her to him though. 1900 US Census for Knox ,NE lists Nancy at age 68 yrs. ,had been married at age 31 (or married when she was 31 yrs old) that she had 5 children, but only I living(that would be Isabella or Elizabeth St. Clair, former wife of Stephen Blacksmith). Isabella's father, I believe was a whiteman, named ? Miller.(REf. Old Betsy,The Life And Times of a Famous Dakota Woman and her family. Mark Diedrich. 1995 and 2005(or 6). prairie Smoke Press. I hope this helps you.
A good reference is "Little Crow,Spokesman For The Sioux"..The appendix has the family tree for Little Crow.
